They began dating in 2008. Sean introduced Alix to the world of ice hockey and from the very beginning she was hooked. Soon the game of hockey became a huge part of their relationship. Both have strapped on skates and taken to the ice to play competitively, and both are rabid fans and season ticket holders of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Sean asked Alix to marry him out on the ice at PPG Place in 2012. Neither the bride nor the groom were big fans of an extravagant wedding. They preferred to keep their theme fun and simple, so a Pittsburgh Penguins themed wedding seemed a natural fit.
For their wedding venue, Alix and Sean booked Ames Barn, an incredible local barn that is purpose-built to host events. The barn setting gave their wedding an elegant, rustic feel that guests found delightfully charming.
The groom’s favorite color was blue, so they went with a deep, royal blue as their primary design element. The bridesmaids wore blue bridal gowns, with fresh floral bouquets highlighted by the same color. Their wedding venue was also accented in blue to continue their theme, and Pittsburgh Penguins jerseys made appearances throughout the day as well.
The bridal party was photographed by Trudy Roney Photography and the typical Pennsylvania weather cooperated … for the most part. Pre-wedding ceremony showers turned from pouring rain to hail; then sunshine just as they were ready to begin taking photos.
For their wedding invitations, the couple chose Sports Themed Weddings to create a personalized event ticket invitation. For their guests, Sean and Alix had custom hockey pucks printed, including their names and wedding date. Guests also took home chocolate bars from Sarris Candies, a family owned, local shop located in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.
For the wedding reception, the couple drew heavily on the support of their two families for help. Family members put together the decorations for the venue including lighting and handmade Pittsburgh Penguins hockey jerseys to serve as the table numbers. All of the food and deserts were also made by family, including a Stanley Cup Wedding Cake. Guests even signed a Pittsburgh Penguins hockey jersey guestbook for the couple to hang in their new home.
Upon arriving at the reception, the bridal party was introduced to the universal sports anthem, “Kernkraft 400” performed by German electronic artist Zombie Nation.
“We felt the hockey theme made us stress less, we were less worried about pleasing others and more worried about enjoying our day and having fun. We would recommend (a hockey themed wedding to) anyone thinking about a sports themed wedding … it’s more fun when you can incorporate your personalities and the entire day is more memorable to guests.”
Ilove it! It looks like everyone had fun!
